Its pure rawness and has an intense quality. <br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">The Forest...You're Nothing Anyway, </span>is a slower, more down-tempo track. Its laden with hooky tracks, easy acoustic strums, and melodies you'll remember for days. Riccio's opener, <span style="font-style: italic;">One or Two </span>is reminiscent of a pop/rock Bruce Springsteen. The production quality is stellar and the snare drum is especially perfect for the song.<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">My Will</span>, strings begin the song in a huge fashion. Its swelling and draws the listener in. The vocals excel and are perfectly set in the mix. <span style="font-style: italic;">In and Out </span>has a fun two-step feel with a great circular-acoustic riff leading the song and propelling it forward - its one of those songs you'll crank the volume on as you drive down a country road.<br /><br />Riccio is a talented writer, player, and arranger! On <span style="font-style: italic;">Show Me</span>, Jill's vocals again take on a more clearly soulful attack. On her opening track, <span style="font-style: italic;">Adjust,</span> Christa lilts in a beautiful free-floating melody over bouncing acoustic guitars. Her vocals are clearly her bread winner! Combine crystal clear vocals and catchy lyrics with the depth of her songwriting and you have a star in the making.<br /><br />Her sound is reminiscent of an acoustic-driven Regina Spektor, but yields an honest and unique quality - close enough to the genre for easy listenership, but unique enough to hold her own.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">I Do</span>, is another catchy tune that immediately grabs your attention. It has the quality that begs an indie-movie soundtrack deal. Finally, on <span style="font-style: italic;">Late on Newbury</span>, Christa closes her album like a late night conversation. Its as if she's strumming and singing on the couch across the room from you. Its a perfect ender to an album that's stripped down, easy to engage, and intimate. <br /><br />Watch out Christa Gniadek and in the mean time, pick up her album, <span style="font-style: italic;">Alone or Lying!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4.5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-40387124213063662652010-04-21T20:01:00.000-07:002010-04-21T20:04:21.661-07:00Moons - Ekra<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Nly6E1Cf2Nr79GVbCtuRcMKCf199IbO8m9E9AQr9ucVL7b68UlM7RV83ICtWNeBRYY94CbvJTxRnWqEwIgp0CZ1x1d-Te1Xwol-IB5zk5lr1Ix___yOwasCi_pafUrYq-1HIdLOEsng/s1600/moons.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 250px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Nly6E1Cf2Nr79GVbCtuRcMKCf199IbO8m9E9AQr9ucVL7b68UlM7RV83ICtWNeBRYY94CbvJTxRnWqEwIgp0CZ1x1d-Te1Xwol-IB5zk5lr1Ix___yOwasCi_pafUrYq-1HIdLOEsng/s400/moons.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462792335413828354" border="0" /></a><br />Ekra is a duo rock outfit from New York that's creating circular and layered music with ease. Songs like <span style="font-style: italic;">Intercourse</span> fill the space between ambient Radiohead and dark U2. The track is instrumentally, dark and driving; while the vocal melody is more soothing, anthemic, and reverb-laden.<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">Sagittarius A</span>, a dirty trumpet opens the song before a catchy drum sequence drives the song and takes it to something you might expect from Thom Yorke. I love the way they mixed this song. Its spacious and capitalizes on the hooky vocals, while still giving support and tribute to some stellar instrumental musicianship.<br /><br />Album closer, <span style="font-style: italic;">49 Days</span> is a mid-tempo piece featuring tight bass and drum work. It has elements as contrasting as NIN and The Postal Service, but seems to pull the angularity off.<br /><br />If creative ambient-rock is your genre, you'll love Ekra. If not, you'll still appreciate the ride! I would love to see a live show to experience how they pull off the soundscapes as a duo group.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-33357495272027144402010-04-14T07:18:00.000-07:002010-04-14T07:21:22.503-07:00Naked - Steve Baskin<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOxnqQOivYVlq56cRjV2vnZhBCJboFjUG5O1QQqp3xYdsP4Y1ESXlazuu-W7pLOirruZfMwcpbVLjLqTAlQcn97BZQ1efPd0I-DVZjtUWA0S8iu0MCMIqrjbhleQQtFK-VXQucEDxjh-M/s1600/naked.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 359px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOxnqQOivYVlq56cRjV2vnZhBCJboFjUG5O1QQqp3xYdsP4Y1ESXlazuu-W7pLOirruZfMwcpbVLjLqTAlQcn97BZQ1efPd0I-DVZjtUWA0S8iu0MCMIqrjbhleQQtFK-VXQucEDxjh-M/s400/naked.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459998064908143586" border="0" /></a><br />If its textured Americana alt/pop-rock that you're into, then you'll dig <span style="font-style: italic;">Naked</span>, by Atlanta-based, Steve Baskin. Surrounded by a stellar band, they create soundscapes that accurately articulate each song and Baskin's vocals.<br /><br />Album opener, <span style="font-style: italic;">Catch Me If You Can</span>, is overly poppy, and lends itself to all listeners. It comes across like a blend of Counting Crows and Blue October. Later track, <span style="font-style: italic;">A Day in My Shoes </span>seductively explodes with a great, soaring lead guitar riff. The melodies aren't quite as singable, but the hooks come at you one after another.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Something Smells Fishy</span> belongs main stage at Bonnaroo. BARDO is part punk, part pop, part rock/alternative; but all attitude. Their album opener, <span style="font-style: italic;">GP Boulevard</span> begins with a simple clean guitar riff and King's vocals, sung clearly and flowing. The drive kicks in at the first chorus and remains throughout the rest of the song.<br /><br />On track 3, <span style="font-style: italic;">Beautiful,</span> BARDO begins with a tight, in the pocket, groove that complements King's voice perfectly. The pre-chorus gives you layers and drives you into the hooky chorus, singing "you're beautiful."<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Run,</span> exposes some of the inner grit within the bands songwriting. Its all drive from the beginning to end. The guitar solo is thought provoking and poignant. Its angular from the straightforward punk-rock tune, but its just the art the song needs.<br /><br />Finally, on <span style="font-style: italic;">Free To Go</span>, King lilts her voice from almost spoken-word to floating falsetto. The band works thoughtfully throughout the song and plays just what is needed; nothing more, nothing less.<br /><br />BARDO clearly exhibits recording prowess and songwriting critique.<br /><br />LA'ers...check them out if you haven't already!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-23101148456604855912010-03-22T19:48:00.000-07:002010-03-22T19:50:29.852-07:00The Only Ride You Can Get - Keith Moody<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYMaOoh9t2lToWvjXJth_zMkJXhHFHRqxmj61_2HbL1G1qH-5Jg7HZz4rudLQKEkiHlWDuAcGOoJvhQuoA7GpRzsFhOocTHtwdYRHxI2sTXruB-lRr6vPf6PggWZCdOIogvkXrMGZtVgU/s1600-h/KM.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 317px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYMaOoh9t2lToWvjXJth_zMkJXhHFHRqxmj61_2HbL1G1qH-5Jg7HZz4rudLQKEkiHlWDuAcGOoJvhQuoA7GpRzsFhOocTHtwdYRHxI2sTXruB-lRr6vPf6PggWZCdOIogvkXrMGZtVgU/s400/KM.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451656196986502770" border="0" /></a><br />From the first listen, Keith Moody reminded me of a nice blend of Americana roots-rock and country. There are moments of Tom Petty, Gin Blossoms, and Keith Urban. Moody has a pop appealing ear that truly shows in his writing and production.<br /><br />His album, <span style="font-style: italic;">The Only Ride You Can Get</span>, was produced by Moody and Jason Elgin. Album opener, <span style="font-style: italic;">Think, </span>does a great job of implementing a mandolin into the forefront. The two-step drum groove keeps the pace up and Moody's vocals are stellar.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Press Gas and Go </span>have all of the components of a pop-rock/county tune. There's catchy guitar riffs mixed with vocal hooks that will have you humming along by the second chorus. On <span style="font-style: italic;">Love Drunk,</span> Moody again utilizes the mandolin as lead rhythm instrument. This song falls more into the vein of roots rock a la a more southern Bob Dylan.<br /><br />Finally on his title track, Moody writes a country ballad. The verses are almost spoken, and draw in the listener. The choruses are full of great harmonies and backing vocals that make this a great cap on the album!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-51168273409360342162010-01-31T06:26:00.000-08:002010-01-31T06:27:15.425-08:00Vermillon - Ryan David Orr<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwrswjGu9j_rrMis39RJaVY3gCqfIi36RmbNca8HHn2MdNnJchXI_Fxb44ZFHfKuOSI6nlB_xpbcq51lSYfyiK_MUkfQ8TQEBFGByDESP23hUWMbpaLQJmBtmRhfi0VlkZ2B3zueogzbk/s1600-h/rdo.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 148px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwrswjGu9j_rrMis39RJaVY3gCqfIi36RmbNca8HHn2MdNnJchXI_Fxb44ZFHfKuOSI6nlB_xpbcq51lSYfyiK_MUkfQ8TQEBFGByDESP23hUWMbpaLQJmBtmRhfi0VlkZ2B3zueogzbk/s400/rdo.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432910421894002210" border="0" /></a><br />You know that feeling you get in when you're driving a scenic highway in the summer? There's a feeling of renewal, freshness, ease, and simplicity. That's the feeling you get from Ryan David Orr's album, Vermillon. Its a simple album, easily performed and finds its place to your heart the same way.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Right In Tow</span> has an incredibly singable chorus. Its falsetto glides into pop perfection. On <span style="font-style: italic;">Right in Tow,</span> the syncopated acoustic guitar strum and tambourine backs clear vocals met with harmonies.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Bottle Rocket </span>does a nice job of harnessing what's hot in pop-mainstream, but remains true to the acoustic/americana sound Orr has established. If you could imagine a band like Snow Patrol composing a rootsy acoustic track, you have <span style="font-style: italic;">Bottle Rocket.</span><br /><br />Finally, on <span style="font-style: italic;">Snow Globe Ballerina</span>, his voice lilts and rises to a beautifully simple lullaby. Album opener, <span style="font-style: italic;">Bluesoph,</span> is an easy listen with a great tremolo lead line. It pans back and forth and really keeps your attention. On <span style="font-style: italic;">Silver Mountain Temple</span>, the acoustic guitar plays lead role in a more new age piece. Its complete with woodblocks and rain sticks (you can't go wrong there).<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Zoloph Spaceman</span> kicks off the track with harmonics galore. The guitar work is impressive and angular. Its songs like these that show an artists ability to play what's needed and leave out the extra. John Scofield would have a smile on this one - its truly a great work.<br /><br />But perhaps their best work is on <span style="font-style: italic;">River Song.</span> The acoustic interplay is intoxicating and is reminiscent of Tim Reynolds. The tones and playability earn serious bragging rights!<br /><br />Pick up a copy of <span style="font-style: italic;">Phoenix Rising</span> by Double Helix!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-67485823280608516372010-01-30T18:11:00.000-08:002010-01-30T18:12:31.189-08:00The Grass is Always Greener - Max and the Wild Things<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFtpqVwFpOB-I4w4-ZpadLYpQcFd1zfYhkI3GJ_awSwcB3Ep-vSy0R8a6ez_ke2cPRIwiYzybTVKE8L2bkoHEz2ZM0uxzAepYpYlQj-QzlZHu-fFvQfeeEzOjIhvmDXJ04Eo2vfxHq2Zk/s1600-h/mwt.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 170px; height: 165px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFtpqVwFpOB-I4w4-ZpadLYpQcFd1zfYhkI3GJ_awSwcB3Ep-vSy0R8a6ez_ke2cPRIwiYzybTVKE8L2bkoHEz2ZM0uxzAepYpYlQj-QzlZHu-fFvQfeeEzOjIhvmDXJ04Eo2vfxHq2Zk/s400/mwt.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432721067783666802" border="0" /></a>Max and the Wild Things weave a sonic quality of raw textured sounds that brings you to the front of the stage. Their groove oriented and open mixing gives the feel of a live show. On <span style="font-style: italic;">Without A Sound,</span> the band accompanies a free floating vocal lead line that feels like its leading everyone in a rockin' party. Its full and showcases a belting trumpet.<br /><br />The next track, <span style="font-style: italic;">Saturday in May,</span> steps back from the in your face party groove and acts as a more subtle track altogether. The vocals again harness a leadership quality and call the listener to attention. On <span style="font-style: italic;">You Got Your,</span> the band steps back in time to a sound more reminiscent of the past (think oldies circa 50's & 60's).<br /><br />All in all, I would have a hard time believing anyone not enjoying themselves with this album. The instrumentation harnesses a nice live quality. I would prefer more attention to the vocals, but to each their own.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 3 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-21880686810687963632010-01-04T13:04:00.000-08:002010-01-04T13:06:36.933-08:00Voice in the Dark<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz_H6y4_X5vD3r-ZkpAkpv6uujVlA_TRFY7Sc2gwMe9thITgDwg24gDDx8heJxkrd3iVx1_5ITM6SFFwP_aQh3enkJ92CcxEh72KdyTxCnksrLykm9vUtkOXtPHjEthjFTVh1LKhVp_o8/s1600-h/vitd.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 262px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz_H6y4_X5vD3r-ZkpAkpv6uujVlA_TRFY7Sc2gwMe9thITgDwg24gDDx8heJxkrd3iVx1_5ITM6SFFwP_aQh3enkJ92CcxEh72KdyTxCnksrLykm9vUtkOXtPHjEthjFTVh1LKhVp_o8/s400/vitd.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422993729338116898" border="0" /></a><br />Voice in the Dark is the San Diego pop/rock band that writes, writes, and writes some more. They have a huge catalog of songs that are selective and poignant to certain topics and issues. I've chosen to focus my review on their 2009 release, <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">Gaia</span>.<br /><br />Voice in the Dark says this about Gaia, <span style="font-style: italic;">"The inspiration driving the creation of Gaia comes from a calling to love our mother earth, remember that it is our responsibility to help others in need, and how vital it is for us to believe in ourselves."</span><br /><br />It has elements of Depeche Mode and Morrissey combined with edgy, New Age, instrumentation. It comes out strong on <span style="font-style: italic;">Let's not Forget</span>. Layers of synths and groove to ambient vocals, sets the mood.<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">Stop</span>, they employ the acoustic guitar to shine through the mix, as they sing of getting home. Its more angular, but works well. The band is longing and convincing; and it shows in the performance.<br /><br />Finally on, <span style="font-style: italic;">Can You Believe</span>, the band really shines. The song is set in a clearer and stronger vocal range. The band excels as it works in tandem to create a soundscape any fan of Euro-pop would grab hold of quickly.<br /><br />To hear more from Voice in the Dark, check out their webiste: <span style="font-weight: bold;">www.voiceinthedarkmusic.com</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 3.5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-3796501434519052312010-01-04T12:30:00.001-08:002010-01-04T12:44:52.019-08:00Dreams That Aren't Mine - David Forest<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtPq_GbLPoKrZHAzzOTf2Nb1-chy5VJjvaRdgaNgfPkrQNuQiK3eH9CgrcbvdnBHlwds4UwWj-jcgS12L0Ohp-PXk-7QnU4s7D74TqkzcV0XS3h9Bg14EKNljeao0xUCGDuuP6-KBZI94/s1600-h/david.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 233px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtPq_GbLPoKrZHAzzOTf2Nb1-chy5VJjvaRdgaNgfPkrQNuQiK3eH9CgrcbvdnBHlwds4UwWj-jcgS12L0Ohp-PXk-7QnU4s7D74TqkzcV0XS3h9Bg14EKNljeao0xUCGDuuP6-KBZI94/s400/david.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422988349526741010" border="0" /></a><br />David Forest is a fresh sound. This LA songwriter has some talent and I imagine i'm not the first to notice it. His album's opener, <span style="font-style: italic;">Dreams That Aren't Mine</span> spans piano pop, rock alternative, and vocal perfection. Forest can go from a strong lead to soft floating falsetto in a note or two - a real success.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Just as Satisfied </span>begins like a dream; eerie music boxes swirling, and abruptly moves to a more pulsing tune. On this song, Forest utilizes a lower voicing on the verses and offers more dynamic on the chorus. Its reminiscent of David Gray.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Keep on Climbing </span>is a more layered song. It begins with strings oozing from the corners. The acoustic strum combines with a tasty ambient-percussion loop and sits in between his softer vocals nicely.<br /><br />David Forest is an uber-solid talent, writer, and performer!<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-39323978511697421282009-12-29T06:41:00.000-08:002009-12-29T06:44:24.112-08:00Knitting Songs - Savannah Jo Lack<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfmlnSjALJ0lGKwIDvRr7uK3SsHet1mVMMdPdLecEYIZRWioJ2J1IK6VFjfWC8Qx5mwLln7m3ruNa6s-nnPPfB6-TppKUPpiaQeGz2myTE6SFSxn9mdOERALDkScfW2C0hGv8db40quk4/s1600-h/slj.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 170px; height: 113px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfmlnSjALJ0lGKwIDvRr7uK3SsHet1mVMMdPdLecEYIZRWioJ2J1IK6VFjfWC8Qx5mwLln7m3ruNa6s-nnPPfB6-TppKUPpiaQeGz2myTE6SFSxn9mdOERALDkScfW2C0hGv8db40quk4/s400/slj.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420669018463806338" border="0" /></a><br />Its a great feeling when one of your last reviews of the year hits home in such nicety that all you want to do is play it over and over again. Savannah Jo Lack's, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Knitting Songs,</span> is exactly that album! Its a pure mix of pop, americana, folk, and authenticity that's lacking in today's scene.<br /><br />The opening Track, <span style="font-style: italic;">Blank Page Day</span>, is a great testament to her writing and song sculpture. It's simple and fun, but has an anthemic quality like something you'd expect from the likes of Elbow. <span style="font-style: italic;">Little Girl</span> is a beautifully sad story dealing with race, abuse, fear, and more. It takes critical talent to mix beauty like this one with cringing lyrics/story. Her writing is poignant and powerful!<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">Old Man Perry</span>, her violin loop provides an excellent backdrop for the folksy-alterna-newgrass tune. She really displays an exquisite fresh talent with this instrumentation. Finally, <span style="font-style: italic;">Ocean Dreams</span> escapes the speakers like a dark composition by the Kronos String Quartet. Its rich with pizzicato and honesty.<br /><br />All in all, her album is top notch. The writing, instrumentation, and production are all stellar. I'd be very interested to see the live show - to witness these songs take shape, layer after layer.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">(Truly one of the top 3 albums I've reviewed all year long!)</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-52784616167196883192009-12-23T05:32:00.001-08:002009-12-23T05:34:59.795-08:00Strange Part of the Country - Conil<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjezyklSKkTADshXSqgzOUi4YI1V-89z3y8Xl8GnAyP4Jz4V6C8mH180eNU4apJBehHnPz3fyo1f4ISK5RCBOFKAG8ehhOq0XP1wfIbFgb0NTH0Kxv81WzZg6hhHsNsDmFBueArPzy754/s1600-h/conil.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 304px; height: 253px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjezyklSKkTADshXSqgzOUi4YI1V-89z3y8Xl8GnAyP4Jz4V6C8mH180eNU4apJBehHnPz3fyo1f4ISK5RCBOFKAG8ehhOq0XP1wfIbFgb0NTH0Kxv81WzZg6hhHsNsDmFBueArPzy754/s400/conil.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418424265147373394" border="0" /></a><br />Coming at us from the UK is a great rock-singer/songwriter, Conil. On his debut album, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Strange Part of the Country,</span> he's worked with an all star engineer and mixer, Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Pearl Jam). Conil's voice has an interesting quality to it that's hard to label. Its not overly raspy, not overly pop, and has the ability to go from scream to lilting falsetto in one or two bars.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Strange Part of the Country</span> is an acoustic rock piece with great instrumentation. Imagine Alice in Chains and Elbow writing a song together - that's what you get here. <span style="font-style: italic;">Years Between</span> is a light track with easy percussion and instrumentation that surrounds his passionate voice.<br /><br />On a later track, <span style="font-style: italic;">Grapevine,</span> the verses are reminiscent of Depeche Mode (minus the layered synths), and the chorus' pull out the stops and really deliver. But perhaps his best track is <span style="font-style: italic;">Bonediggers</span>. Its go great instrumental work - tasty use of perc and bass and just enough axillary to really sell the song. Overall, the writing and production are working well together. Its by no surprise that Conil has been receiving stellar reviews throughout the UK.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4.5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-16541190770590520352009-12-23T05:16:00.001-08:002009-12-23T05:18:06.720-08:00Down Home Girl - Kathryn Caine<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOk5dv5VoJhlxW-uRqEF0T-8UCdn95Ycn1gmFT2LCPQjZMj5dhvu5-743ImWDy4SlPY32H4zj_eC_tfyjz9o2jT-yFiDe_DnGbQGqTCBuQkl-0A1jpoivxxJhzfIEH0_X6pvJgbmFri20/s1600-h/KC.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 350px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOk5dv5VoJhlxW-uRqEF0T-8UCdn95Ycn1gmFT2LCPQjZMj5dhvu5-743ImWDy4SlPY32H4zj_eC_tfyjz9o2jT-yFiDe_DnGbQGqTCBuQkl-0A1jpoivxxJhzfIEH0_X6pvJgbmFri20/s400/KC.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418420248112921986" border="0" /></a><br />Sometimes the only cure for a bland road trip is great bluegrass music. So it is with Kathryn Caine's, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Down Home Girl</span>. Appropriate for the road trip is her first track, <span style="font-style: italic;">Wheels.</span> Its full of tinny acoustic strum (guitars and mandolins) and sassy harmonies.<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">Far Away,</span> there's a stellar fiddle lead line that runs throughout the song - a great complement to Caine's vocals, and a perfect showcase of the albums talent. A slower track, <span style="font-style: italic;">For You </span>gives more highlight to Caine's voice as there's not much else to cover it up. Her voice is clear when need be, and has just enough edge to make a Sheryl Crow comparison.<br /><br />Finally her track, <span style="font-style: italic;">Honey Hill </span>does a fantastic job blending pop with bluegrass. Its a full drum kit, bass, electric guitars outfit; but all the while still has a bluegrass quality. This may be a more accessible track for people not totally sold on the more pure genre, but I think her best writings and recordings are in the more pure bluegrass tracks.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4 of 5 stars </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-70215224654556277792009-12-01T12:25:00.000-08:002009-12-01T12:40:43.542-08:00Please Interstellar Policeman - Poland<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL9VIfOJPb8sWqXbhB93HPZNMz5tg0gDlgLIg-tw-D2pcsAIgsZ5ADrsIl151-5HLBFlGNYAV_Yg-4O8oLRxZ3WXSBvoPblfpHTCrLSthBP8k1Xl0fnUpw0n5AU7yGKhxQhVjmrgVppIU/s1600/poland.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL9VIfOJPb8sWqXbhB93HPZNMz5tg0gDlgLIg-tw-D2pcsAIgsZ5ADrsIl151-5HLBFlGNYAV_Yg-4O8oLRxZ3WXSBvoPblfpHTCrLSthBP8k1Xl0fnUpw0n5AU7yGKhxQhVjmrgVppIU/s320/poland.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410370461563154178" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Poland</span> is the Seattle, pop-rock outfit that's writing some great tunes! He's uniquely gifted and sits in a great place - to the side of the bland singer/songwriter sect. Its accessible, but much more artsy than the general vibe coming from the genre. His music is part folk, jazz, bluegrass, and acoustic singer/songwriter. But its the undeniable roosty-Americana sounds that really make his album, <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Shipwrecked!</span> truly soar!<br /><br />Songs like <span style="font-style: italic;">Don't Go</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Salvation's Round the Bend,</span> make this unique blend work. <span style="font-style: italic;">Ice Upon the Ocean </span>is one of his best. This is truly one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time. Davila combines a nice blend of pop and rock to create his signature sound.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Go Back,</span> the album opener is hooky and drives. Its recorded with stellar accuracy. On, <span style="font-style: italic;">Your Always on My Mind</span>, he slows things down and brings in a groovier element. There's a good amount of vocal loops and help to showcase Davila's voice. The chorus has a very corporate worship element to it. Its simple and singable.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">My Ninety One </span>is more of a spoken song with an acoustic strum to carry it. Its reminiscent of a Bon Jovi record - a nice blend of anthem rock with accessible pop.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 3.5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-11228098211422525162009-12-01T11:46:00.000-08:002009-12-01T11:55:27.255-08:00Scraping for Change<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNgyQgygxOQnG-gz_p_F2gQK2jA-Oh0m-r3rqJRdxLhsdMYpO4WWEm32GNDDYUPpD9ZWhee0XPAynvdFXjpJRtSgsUKaYiuLEdgNxqtDxZhwKrS5byTK5jwaT-OZYbbcoTjMAIo_kENPA/s1600/SFC.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 170px; height: 95px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNgyQgygxOQnG-gz_p_F2gQK2jA-Oh0m-r3rqJRdxLhsdMYpO4WWEm32GNDDYUPpD9ZWhee0XPAynvdFXjpJRtSgsUKaYiuLEdgNxqtDxZhwKrS5byTK5jwaT-OZYbbcoTjMAIo_kENPA/s320/SFC.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410358610918890642" border="0" /></a><br />It is my pleasure to preview the upcoming 2010 E.P. from <span style="font-weight: bold;">Scraping For Change</span>. First off, the recording quality and production value is very top-notch! These guys clearly have spent the time necessary to go over everything with a fine-toothed comb to ensure everything is in its appropriate place.<br /><br />The drums and bass click together like a machine, the guitar work is edgy, progressive, and forward-thinking, and the vocals are performed with pure intensity and emotion. All in all, the recording moves in and out of intense art that I think anyone of the alternative rock genre will come to love. If you're a fan of Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age, and Story of the Year; then you'll love Scraping For Change.<br /><br />Everyone...BE ON THE LOOKOUT!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4.5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-54494401129550926682009-12-01T11:38:00.000-08:002009-12-01T11:57:03.609-08:00Trio - Ironwood Rain<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZZsxsp2QYPK-zP93TCK8bJppa5NKaCecDDxrVeURO-fzNY5rpBOZVwVzlxid4QFH_5CLbYPQ8lyBmzH-6OEshm11RbIGX1vWgdWnn76wLXZBT2X150wmsj8hu1zM1as-46fz_uHbwtNs/s1600/IR.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 170px; height: 113px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZZsxsp2QYPK-zP93TCK8bJppa5NKaCecDDxrVeURO-fzNY5rpBOZVwVzlxid4QFH_5CLbYPQ8lyBmzH-6OEshm11RbIGX1vWgdWnn76wLXZBT2X150wmsj8hu1zM1as-46fz_uHbwtNs/s320/IR.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410356342725172162" border="0" /></a><br />Colorado's acoustic trio, Ironwood Rain, releases their album Trio with ease and confidence. The album is one beautiful track after another. Its simplicity at its best that makes these guys fit together so nicely.<br /><br />Songs like, <span style="font-style: italic;">Until the End of Time,</span> shows this acoustic interplay working for them. The vocals are sparse and simple. There's complementary harmonies and melodies. On,<span style="font-style: italic;"> '39</span>, they bring out a real gospel/bluegrass element that works well in this arrangement (there's even a whistle solo).<br /><br />If you happen to be in Colorado, check the music of Ironwood Rain.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 3 of 5 stars </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-22719276855848597132009-11-02T12:40:00.000-08:002009-11-02T12:41:51.768-08:00Death to god - deVries<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTovaM9DGm1A3eO2QtfU3M6Ep5whHqqCFNi8RJ6A2ZgmYVNKLcEtGBApYhhQ2EYXcoBhgidRF4JH5_5yXStAO8EofVyQxxCHsdqScjlHuRTWcEIoTA4RQfkSYXmSiXbSecxn4RpoxQ63g/s1600-h/devries.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 170px; height: 208px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTovaM9DGm1A3eO2QtfU3M6Ep5whHqqCFNi8RJ6A2ZgmYVNKLcEtGBApYhhQ2EYXcoBhgidRF4JH5_5yXStAO8EofVyQxxCHsdqScjlHuRTWcEIoTA4RQfkSYXmSiXbSecxn4RpoxQ63g/s400/devries.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399609294149987810" border="0" /></a><br />deVries is the music musings of Travis DeVries, Sean Gibbons, Dan Ollvo, and Marco Echanove. The 4-piece band writes well and produces even better.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Girl In The Fur-Skin Rug</span> is an epic/ambient sounding tune that sounds like NIN playing the Beatles. <span style="font-style: italic;">Black Thursday Repeat </span>is extremely catchy. They're able to write very poppy music with a dark harness placed over it.<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">Shoulder to Shoulder, </span>the band becomes more anthemic, reminiscent of The Who. Finally, on <span style="font-style: italic;">Slowing Down,</span> the band goes tribal with its percussion and instrumentation. Its a perfect blend of ambient drone and texture.<br /><br />The overall production value is high and the writing is mature. This band is something to watch!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4.5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-79088091159619965602009-11-02T12:28:00.001-08:002009-11-02T12:29:09.808-08:00Without Wax - Harley Jay<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5cTAYPO0dWM5fymSBPo7DQQ5H0IFcfTkF8HCiGYdX8ayYguQJFkBVfrkY7fTxqZzmHp3o-P-za8C14kPFM3z24xg2H8ccyusxo1BYKmcr5FuVpph8E_JIB23Bly7oPZHrzdX-cQZOD_I/s1600-h/HJ.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 234px; height: 350px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5cTAYPO0dWM5fymSBPo7DQQ5H0IFcfTkF8HCiGYdX8ayYguQJFkBVfrkY7fTxqZzmHp3o-P-za8C14kPFM3z24xg2H8ccyusxo1BYKmcr5FuVpph8E_JIB23Bly7oPZHrzdX-cQZOD_I/s400/HJ.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399606016261638386" border="0" /></a><br />Harley Jay is pure talent. He's an LA native and has a resume that most would die for. Hearing 30 seconds of his record <span style="font-style: italic;">Without Wax</span>, its obvious this guy has a background in musical theatre. Opener, <span style="font-style: italic;">And She Said,</span> features catchy rhythms, hooks, and vocals - falsetto galore and guitar riffs to boot.<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">Lipstick Letter</span>, Jay employs his unique country/rock blend more clearly. Its got some extremely tasty acoustic guitar interplay and fantastic harmonies. <span style="font-style: italic;">The Fall</span> is even more Nashville, but the twang is replaced with feedback (that's a good thing), probably his best song.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Maybe I'm Crazy</span> slows things down with a nice finger picked acoustic guitar sound. By the second verse the band starts a groove and you'll be humming along. This is one of his catchier ballads.<br /><br />It's a pop-perfected album with lots of great stuff going on. If you're a fan of music spanning from Keith Urban to Maroon5, then you'll love this CD!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4.5 of 5 stars</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6626163972325665583.post-78078658104389613262009-11-02T12:01:00.000-08:002009-11-02T12:03:17.918-08:00The Morning Birds - Inspiration Point<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpQ51NL3I4s3cfHNom0ZXKjYThyClQayGk1VPuMfuUsZPIOlIUOVhCJD6aGq5N0DBlrIRwCoYxCBtaNyvM_AWkjB2Oy2xr3IdCoOladlib_5yZIb0N12mf9lk5rpc0I3GBX29jFfhTrcg/s1600-h/TMB.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 170px; height: 170px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpQ51NL3I4s3cfHNom0ZXKjYThyClQayGk1VPuMfuUsZPIOlIUOVhCJD6aGq5N0DBlrIRwCoYxCBtaNyvM_AWkjB2Oy2xr3IdCoOladlib_5yZIb0N12mf9lk5rpc0I3GBX29jFfhTrcg/s400/TMB.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399599340978933666" border="0" /></a><br />Hollywood's, The Morning Birds, are a polished and professional band spouting art at every turn. Its part folk, part rock, and all accessible. Their 2009 release, <span style="font-style: italic;">Inspiration Point </span>is an impressive work of music - 16 tracks (so i'll try and focus on my favorite songs).<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Seed of Life</span> comes at you like a folk piece reminiscent of a commune experience. Its easy with layered vocals and smoky with emotion. <span style="font-style: italic;">Bag Full of Emotion</span> is in the same vein. Its a bit more atmospheric as it lends itself to a true psychedelic quality. If the Doors were still releasing albums, this song would be on it.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Heart Connection </span>is a Dylan-esque song that uses their strong asset of layered vocals and simplified percussive grooves. The focus clearly being the vocal melody lines, this one rises.<br /><br />It's great to hear varied production tactics, and these guys employ them nicely. Catch a show the next time you're in California!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">RATING: 4 of 5 stars </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
